Dr. Edward J. Valeau
Dr. Valeau is a former teacher. He has served for more than thirty-
five years in the field of Higher Education as Faculty, Program
Developer, Dean of Instruction, Vice President for Academic Affairs
and President. He is Superintendent/President Emeritus of Hartnell
Community College District. It is a Hispanic Serving Institution in
Salinas, California. His twelve-year tenure is considered a
renaissance period in the colleges nearly one hundred years.
Under his leadership as Superintendent/President, the district won
designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution. It also passed one
hundred-thirty-one-million-dollar bond for the improvement and
development of new teaching and learning facilities. This resulted in
the construction of several new facilities including state-of-the-art
buildings such as the Library Learning Resource Center, Science
Technology Building, Ag Tech Complex, Center for Applied Arts,
development of the King City Learning Complex, a Multi-level
Parking Garage, and a Student Services and Registration Complex.
Additionally, the district developed outstanding programs that
included a Marine Applied Technology Education Partnership
Program and a Japanese Agricultural Training Program. Both were
national and international in scope and designed to meet the needs of
Ed has experience in budgeting, personnel staffing, and evaluation,
facilities planning, program development and evaluation, management
and board leadership training and development, grant writing, and
organizational management. His leadership, over the span of his
professional career, has influenced the acquisition of more than three
hundred million dollars in external funding for educational purposes.
He has founded and successfully served as CEO of several small
consulting companies. They include the Institute for Achievement and
Motivation that had an emphasis on diversity training, Continuing
Education Training for Nurses, a state-approved consultancy that
offered CEUs (Continuing Education Units) for Nurses; the ELS
Group, a national Higher Education CEO Executive Search firm, and
Valeauinternational and Associates, a national training consultancy.
Dr. Valeau earned his doctorate degree from the University of
California Berkeley, Berkeley, California, and Certificate from the
Harvard Institute of Educational Management, Boston, Massachusetts.
He is an American Council on Education Fellow, Fulbright Scholar
(India /Nepal), and a Harry Buttimer Awardee for Outstanding
Leadership as a CEO in California Community Colleges; He is an
author. In 2018, he co-edited his fifth book entitled, Handbook of
Comparative Studies on Community Colleges & Global Counterparts
which received Honorable Mention for the Best Book Award from the
Comparative & International Education Society. In 2010, the Society
awarded him and his co-editor the Best book Award for, Community
College Models Globalization, and Higher Education Reform.
Currently, Dr. Valeau is drafting a book on the Seven Steps to Become
a Community College President.
Ed is an International Professional Photographer. He enjoys golfing,
playing the Djembe Drum, Backgammon, and international traveling.
He is married and has one son.
